Bjorem Speech Sound Cues
help children build awareness of speech sounds
Making speech sounds easier to understand, remember, and produce
Developed by childhood apraxia specialist Jennie Bjorem, M.A., CCC-SLP, this visual cueing system pairs each speech sound with a memorable image and gesture — turning an abstract, “invisible” sound into something a child can see, connect with, and remember. These visual cues give children a consistent reference point across therapy and home practice, and they layer well alongside motor-based approaches like DTTC, helping reinforce accurate, stable sound production.
How Do Speech Sound Cues Help?
Some children benefit from more than verbal instructions when learning a new speech sound. A visual cue can give a child a concrete image to connect with a sound, making the target easier to remember and recognize.
Depending on the child’s individual needs, visual speech sound cues may support:
- Speech sound awareness
- Sound identification
- Articulation practice
- Phonological awareness
- Sound discrimination
- Recall of target sounds
- Production of new speech sounds
- Generalization of sounds into words and phrases
Who Can Benefit?
Bjorem Speech Sound Cues may be incorporated into therapy for children who experience:
Articulation Disorders
Children who have difficulty producing specific speech sounds.
Phonological Disorders
Children who use sound patterns that make their speech difficult to understand.
