Sometimes parents come to me wondering why their child avoids handwriting, chews on pencils constantly, seems messy when eating, or gets frustrated during tasks that require fine motor control.
When I start piecing together those clues, one thing I may consider is whether a primitive reflex is still hanging around a little longer than expected.
One reflex that often doesn’t get talked about enough is the Babkin Palmar Reflex.
Although it’s present from birth and plays an important role during infancy, when it sticks around beyond the first few months of life, it can contribute to challenges with hand skills, oral motor development, attention, and coordination.

What Is the Babkin Palmar Reflex?
The Babkin Palmar Reflex is an involuntary response present at birth.
When pressure is applied to both palms simultaneously, a baby will often:
- Open their mouth
- Turn their head
- Flex their neck forward
- Show rooting or sucking behaviors
This reflex helps connect the hands and mouth during infancy.

In those first months, babies rely heavily on reflexes to help them feed, connect with caregivers, and explore the world around them. The Babkin reflex creates an important link between the hands and the mouth, supporting feeding and early sensory experiences.
As the nervous system develops, that hand-to-mouth connection becomes more voluntary and controlled.
When the reflex doesn’t fully integrate, the body may continue to react automatically when the hands are engaged, and we can start to see challenges in areas that require more refined motor and oral control.
A typical Babkin response looks like this:
- Pressure applied to both palms. To test, I like to have the child crumble a piece of paper in each hand simultaneously, without compensating like using their other hand or body for support.
- Mouth opens, oral overflow with tongue
- Head may turn or flex forward
- Sucking or rooting movements may occur
This reflex is usually present at birth and is expected to integrate by about 3–4 months of age.
Signs the Babkin Reflex May Not Be Fully Integrated
As a COTA, I always look at the whole picture rather than one single behavior.
Here are some clues that the Babkin reflex may still be active:
Fine Motor & Hand Skills
- Difficulty with handwriting
- Fatigue during coloring or drawing
- Poor pencil grasp
- Challenges with buttoning, zipping, or manipulating small objects
- Hands appearing tense during fine motor tasks
Oral Motor & Feeding Clues
- Excessive drooling beyond developmental expectations
- Messy eating patterns
- Difficulty chewing efficiently
- Challenges with speech articulation
- Mouth movements when concentrating with the hands
Attention & Learning Patterns
- Poor focus during tabletop work
- Difficulty completing written assignments
- Needing frequent movement breaks
- Frustration during fine motor tasks
Movement & Coordination Signs
- Hand and mouth movements occurring together unexpectedly
- Difficulty separating hand movements from oral movements
- Reduced bilateral coordination
- Challenges crossing midline
Why Integration Matters
When the Babkin reflex remains active, the connection between the hands and mouth can stay stronger than it should be.
Instead of the brain managing these systems independently, they may continue influencing one another in ways that interfere with more advanced skills.
This can show up as:
- Fine motor delays – handwriting, manipulating small objects, scissor skills.
- Oral motor and speech skills -decreased oral motor control, excessive drooling, and increased oral sensory seeking behavior (chewing on shirt, fingernail biting, mouthing of objects), feeding difficulties.
- Self-care skills – brushing teeth, using utensils and fastening buttons/managing clothing.
- Frustration during school tasks
- Reduced endurance for hand-based activities
When a child’s nervous system is using extra energy to compensate for retained reflexes, it can make learning and attention more challenging overall. Reflex integration is about helping the nervous system mature so that movements become more efficient, coordinated, and voluntary.
Ways to Help Integrate the Babkin Reflex
This is where I always remind parents that support doesn’t have to be complicated. Some of the best opportunities for integration happen naturally through play, movement, and everyday activities.
1. Hand-to-Hand Play
Activities that encourage both hands to work together can strengthen more mature movement patterns.
Try:
- Clapping games
- Playing with play dough
- Rolling balls back and forth
- Building with blocks
- Stringing beads
These activities encourage coordination while helping the brain develop more refined hand control.
2. Oral Motor Activities
Since the Babkin reflex links the hands and mouth, supporting oral motor awareness can be helpful.
Try:
- Blowing bubbles
- Drinking through straws
- Whistles and pinwheels
- Chewy foods (when developmentally appropriate)
- Making silly faces in the mirror
These activities build oral motor strength and awareness in a fun, low-pressure way.
3. Tactile Play for the Hands
Giving the hands lots of sensory experiences can support nervous system organization.
Try:
- Sensory bins
- Finger painting
- Playing in sand
- Water play
- Exploring different textures
The more opportunities the brain has to process hand input, the better it can develop mature movement patterns.
4. Weight-Bearing Through the Hands
Weight-bearing activities provide powerful proprioceptive input and help strengthen the upper body.
Try:
- Wheelbarrow walks
- Bear walks
- Crab walks
- Crawling through obstacle courses
- Yoga poses like downward dog
These activities can promote stability while supporting more mature hand function.
Building Success Through Everyday Play
One thing I always tell parents is that reflex integration isn’t usually about doing one perfect activity.
It’s about giving the nervous system repeated opportunities to practice more mature movement patterns over time.
The best results often come from:
- Consistency
- Playfulness
- Connection
- Movement-rich activities
- Meeting your child where they are
Little moments throughout the day add up more than you might think!
