If you’ve ever seen your baby suddenly startle—arms flying out, fingers spread wide, maybe followed by a cry—you’ve witnessed the Moro reflex, often called the “startle reflex.” It’s completely normal in early infancy, but as your child grows, we want to see this reflex fade and integrate. When it doesn’t fully integrate, it can quietly impact development in ways that aren’t always obvious at first.
What Is the Moro Reflex?
The Moro reflex is an involuntary response present at birth. It’s the nervous system’s early “alarm system,” helping babies respond to sudden changes like loud noises, quick movements, or feeling unsupported.
Here’s the really important part I always want parents to understand:
The Moro reflex is designed to keep babies safe.
It acts as a protective mechanism—basically saying, “Something changed quickly, pay attention!” In those early months, that’s exactly what we want.
But over time, as the brain matures, this reflex is meant to integrate (fade out) and be replaced with more controlled, thoughtful responses.
If it doesn’t integrate, the body can continue to respond as if everything is a threat.
This is where it starts to “pathologize” normal experiences—meaning everyday sounds, movements, or changes can feel overwhelming or unsafe to the nervous system.
And that’s often where we start to see anxiety-like responses, heightened sensitivity, or that constant “on edge” feeling in kids.
A typical Moro response looks like this:
- Arms fling outward
- Fingers spread
- Body may stiffen
- Then arms come back in (like a hug)
- Often followed by crying
In older kiddos, I like to look for a retained Moro reflex during movements like pigeon or penguin walks—when the feet turn out into a V shape and the arms involuntarily flare out to the sides in response, which tells me the reflex may still be there.
This reflex is supposed to integrate by about 4–6 months of age.
Signs the Moro Reflex May Not Be Fully Integrated
As a COTA, I always zoom out and look at patterns across areas—not just one behavior.
Here are some signs that the Moro reflex might still be active:
Emotional & Regulation Clues
- Easily startled or overwhelmed by noise, lights, or movement
- Difficulty calming once upset
- Anxiety or a constant “on alert” feeling
Sensory Processing Signs
- Sensitive to noise (covering ears, distress in loud settings)
- Avoids busy or unpredictable environments
- Strong fight/flight responses
- Struggles with transitions
Attention & Learning Patterns
- Difficulty focusing
- Easily distracted or hypervigilant
- Appears “on edge” instead of settled and ready to learn
Movement & Body Awareness
- Poor balance or coordination
- Stiff or less fluid movement patterns
- Difficulty with posture-related tasks
Why Integration Matters
When the Moro reflex stays active, the nervous system can get stuck in protection mode.
Instead of responding thoughtfully, the body reacts—like it’s always scanning for danger.
This can show up as:
- Chronic stress or anxiety
- Sensory sensitivities
- Challenges with focus and learning
- Difficulty feeling regulated in daily life
The goal of integration isn’t to “get rid of” something bad—it’s to help the nervous system feel safe enough to move out of survival mode.
Ways to Help Integrate the Moro Reflex
This is where I always try to take the pressure off parents—this doesn’t have to be complicated or clinical. A lot of this looks like connection, movement, and play!
1. Deep Pressure & Proprioceptive Input
- Bear hugs
- Weighted blankets (age-appropriate)
- Pushing/pulling games
- Animal walks
These help calm that overactive alert system.
2. Gentle, Rhythmic Movement
- Rocking
- Slow swinging
- Dancing to steady rhythms
Predictability helps the nervous system feel safe again.
3. Breathing & Regulation Play
- Blowing bubbles
- Pretend candle blowing
- Smell the flower / blow out the candle
Simple, but so powerful!
4. Startle-to-Calm Exercises
- Open arms wide slowly
- Bring arms in for a hug
- Pair with deep breathing
This helps the body “complete” the reflex in a controlled way.
5. Build a Predictable Environment
- Prep for transitions
- Keep routines consistent
- Reduce sudden sensory input when possible
Combining safety and predictability = regulation.
A Gentle Reminder
If you’re seeing some of these signs, it doesn’t mean something is “wrong.”
It often just means your child’s nervous system is still trying to protect them the best way it knows how!
